A Case of Placental Tuberculosis

Abstract
Tuberculosis in pregnancy is still a major problem in many part of the world.Although most tuberculosis in pregnancy is restricted to pulmmonary lesion, lymphatic or henatogenous spread of tuberculosis is infrequently occurred. Tuberculous
endometritis
or miliary tuberculosis of the mother during pregnancy can spread the tubercle bacilli to the fetus or the newborn at the time of delivery, And hematogenos spread can also occur via infected placenta through the umbilical vein.
Thereforem it is important in pregnancy who is suspected to have tuberculosis to examine the placenta at delivery. Ziehl= Neelsen stain for Acid-fast bacilli(AFB) stains,cultures, and histologic examination should be performed, placental
involvement may
indicate unsuspected disease in the mother. Tubercle bacilli have been found in placental spectimens and living infants on a few days of birth.
The present report documents the case of a 26-year old primigravida woman, in IUP at 34 weeks, proven placental involvement by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and review of the literature in presented.
